The bass guitarist, primary songwriter and lead singer for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), Andy McCluskey started his professional career in the '70s with friend and fellow vocalist Paul Humphreys. In the January of 1980 they released the album 'OMD', and in September released 'Organization', which had the hit single 'Enola Gay', the first song of the band to enter the top 10 singles in the UK music charts, with the later albums, 'Architeture and Morality' in 1981, 'Dazzle Ships' in 1983, 'Junk Culture' in 1984, and 'Crush' in 1985.
The late 80's saw a drop in the success of the band. Andy McCluskey and his partner retained their huge fan following with albums like "The Pacific Age"(1986), but the band failed to recreate the success of its heyday. In 1989, Paul Humphreys and the rest of the band members left OMD. Andy McCluskey kept the band name intact and brought out three albums. Whilst the first one, Sugar Tax (1991), was the biggest selling album of OMD, the remaining albums "Liberator" and "Universal" fell flat . In 1998, Andy McCluskey formed an all-girl UK pop band featuring the female trio, singer come songwriters Liz McClarnon, Natasha Hamilton, and Jenny Frost, known as 'Atomic Kitten'.
